The EXCEL award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, and each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that have to be met. SHRM-LI will receive recognition in SHRM publications and conferences, a certificate of recognition, and a special banner to display at its meetings and events.

SHRM-LI – Letter From The President -March 2015

In #Executiveboard,Christel Colon,Human Resources,Long Island,President,SHRM,SHRMLI on March 11, 2015 by shrmli Tagged: , , , , , ,

Welcome to SHRM-Long Island 2015!  We hope you like our new website look and want to share even more news.

Our new Executive Board was inducted at our February meeting, by the Chairman of the Board of SHRM National, Brian Silva.
This was a momentous occasion and I am honored and humbled to be serving in the role of President of SHRM-Long Island.  I am privileged to be joined by Danielle Barry SPHR, SHRM-SCP (President-Elect), Lisa Dippel PHR (Treasurer) and Jennifer Pilate-Carey SPHR, SHRM-SCP (Secretary).  I speak for us all when I say, “Thank you for your confidence and trust.”

To those whom we succeed, I want to say thank you.  Thank you for all you have done to provide enormous shoes for us to fill and a bright horizon in our future.  Having watched you over the years drives home what a privilege and undertaking this is.

To our fellow Board Members and Linda I want to say thank you so very much for your partnership, enthusiasm, and energy!  Our synergy and dedication to SHRM-LI will surely take our organization to new heights and continue in the tradition of providing great value and service to our Members.

I am also looking forward to a closer working relationship with our sponsors and vendors.  Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I’d like to thank our Members for placing your trust and support in me and this amazing team.

I have been fortunate in my life and in my career to have long, meaningful, and precious relationships. One of the longest, most meaningful and most prized is my relationship with SHRM-Long Island.

I consider myself enriched by it on every level of my existence.  Of course, my career has benefited from my affiliation with SHRM-LI, but the personal growth and the many great friends I have made along the way, have been the icing and the cherry on top!

I don’t align myself with an organization unless I can embody the mission and the vision of that organization.

That holds true for my employers and for my volunteer affiliations.  Since the early 90s, I have been a Member of this Chapter and a volunteer leader since about 2004.

I have held almost every leadership post – the whole while, thanking my lucky stars to be a part of this amazing organization.  I couldn’t have done it without the support and empowerment of an esteemed group that came before and the guidance and friendship of our secret weapon – Linda Selden-Paduano.

Speaking for the entire Executive Board, I hope you are as proud to be a Member of this organization as we are that you chose us as your leadership team and I look forward to continuing the practice of excellence and innovation that has defined this Chapter for many years to come.

So what excites me about the road ahead?  Everything!  Just before us lies our 24th Annual Conference – HR Renaissance – Educate. Empower. Thrive – on May 8th.  The theme is quite fitting as our profession has experienced a modern-day metamorphosis; especially over the course of my career.

To help the contemporary human capital professional prepare for our ever changing and highly demanding roles, SHRM National has launched two new certifications, SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. But wait!  There’s more!

This past November, SHRM-LI was awarded not one, but two, Pinnacle Awards for the Workforce Readiness Committee VHR Program.  The Pinnacle Award is the Oscar of SHRM National, recognizing Chapter-level efforts that enhance the HR profession.

Our Chapter has so much to celebrate and we hope you will be a part of all that’s yet to come!
Thank you again.  I look forward to serving you with pride and pleasure.
Cheers!

Greenlawn, NY, November 21, 2014 – SHRM Long Island won the Pinnacle Award last week, given by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to its state councils and chapters for highly notable contributions to the HR profession.

Created in 1991, the Pinnacle Award is the highest achievement SHRM state councils and chapters can attain, and it honors programs that exceed the standard activities of SHRM affiliates in enhancing the creation of effective HR management. Disabled workers deserve sensitivity, expert says

Employees and managers need to be more sensitive when they communicate with their disabled colleagues, a disability expert told the annual conference of a local human-resource group in Woodbury.

They should avoid outdated language and stop making assumptions about what a particular disability entails, Nadine Vogel told a Friday workshop at the annual conference of the Society for Human Resource Management at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

She told the audience to avoid outdated and negative terms such as “handicapped” and “crippled.” And she also cautioned the group against inventing terms to refer to the disabled.

“Differently abled” is a popular coined term, said Vogel, the founder and president of Springboard Consulting in Mendham, New Jersey, and the mother of two disabled children.

“Adults with disabilities and parents of children with special needs don’t agree on much, but the one thing they agree on is, ‘What on earth does this mean?’ ”

“Disabled” is the accepted term, she said.

Co-workers also shouldn’t act on assumptions about a disability, she said.

Her older daughter has facial deformities associated with her disabilities. Yet when she goes shopping, sales clerks will often yell, “How can I help you?”

“We make these assumptions that if someone is different they must be deaf,” she said.

Nonverbal sensitivity is also important.

If someone with a hook or prosthetic hand offers you that hand to shake, you shake it.

“For them that hook or prosthetic device is their hand,” she said. Focus groups reveal that some managers respond inappropriately in such cases, Vogel said. “They would stand with their hands by their sides and smile.”

When in doubt about how to react, she said colleagues should ask the disabled person for help. And if they commit a faux pas, they shouldn’t pretend disabled people didn’t hear them.

“They heard it,” she said. “Own it.”

What I’d Like to Tell My 22-year Old Self

In Human Resources,Recruitment,SHRM,Uncategorized on November 18, 2013 by shrmli Tagged: , , , , , , , , , ,

ANECDOTES BY AnnMarie Ballew SHRM-LI College Relations Committee http://www.shrmli.org

As a graduate of the class of 2009 myself and 1,650,000 of my peers entered the job market with a poor dreadful chance of finding jobs in our chosen fields.

After graduation I wrote freelance articles while obsessing over every detail of my resume, applying to every PR job on CareerBuilder and registering with a few staffing agencies. I received my first temp assignment as a file clerk with a process serving company and even though I would be ‘just a file clerk’ and had no idea what a process serving company did, I walked in the front door in my favorite heels and carrying a copy of my resume neatly tucked inside a folder.

By the end of my 3-hour shift my feet hurt but I had impressed the HR Manager so much that she offered me a temp assignment as her HR Assistant. There would still be filing, but I’d also be writing and organizing and—gulp—recruiting! I had never imagined myself in Human Resources but I said yes without hesitation and on 9/9/09 I started my first “real” job. It was absolutely terrifying and it took me a long time to learn HR basics on-the-job, but I did my homework and caught up to where I needed to be.

Four years later I am an HR Generalist at a marketing company and I think I am one of the few people of the world who can honestly say that I love my job. I get to write, create, plan events and use many of my PR skills and I never would have known this wonderful career existed had I not said yes to a temp assignment as a file clerk.

Many of you might pass over entry-level admin jobs because you are “too educated” and that is your choice, but remember one thing—your first job (and second and third) will probably not be your dream job, but you should still be good at it. In fact, you should ROCK that job. It may not always be the beginning of a career but you can and should learn something from every experience and every co-worker so when that dream job comes along you’ve already gotten your mistakes out of the way.

Basically what I’m saying is to seize the day, seize every opportunity, and get out there and do something! That’s how you become an HR rockstar.
