The award is part of the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence, which aligns individual chapters and councils’ activities with SHRM’s aspirations for the HR profession. The award recognizes accomplishments and strategic activities and initiatives that enhance the human resources profession.

SHRM Long Island was also recognized for providing quality initiatives in various categories and excelling in its Chapter Operations and Membership, with membership rising by over 4% to 1,650 (as of 2/24/16).

“SHRM rewards chapters and councils that demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing the human resources profession through service to the community, local networking and professional development activities,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, president and CEO of SHRM. “Advancing the HR profession is at the heart of what SHRM does and SHRM-LI’s work this year helps us further showcase that mission.

The EXCEL award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, and each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that have to be met. SHRM-LI will receive recognition in SHRM publications and conferences, a certificate of recognition, and a special banner to display at its meetings and events.

What I’d Like to Tell My 22-year Old Self

ANECDOTES BY AnnMarie Ballew SHRM-LI College Relations Committee

As a graduate of the class of 2009 myself and 1,650,000 of my peers entered the job market with a poor dreadful chance of finding jobs in our chosen fields.

After graduation I wrote freelance articles while obsessing over every detail of my resume, applying to every PR job on CareerBuilder and registering with a few staffing agencies. I received my first temp assignment as a file clerk with a process serving company and even though I would be ‘just a file clerk’ and had no idea what a process serving company did, I walked in the front door in my favorite heels and carrying a copy of my resume neatly tucked inside a folder.

By the end of my 3-hour shift my feet hurt but I had impressed the HR Manager so much that she offered me a temp assignment as her HR Assistant. There would still be filing, but I’d also be writing and organizing and—gulp—recruiting! I had never imagined myself in Human Resources but I said yes without hesitation and on 9/9/09 I started my first “real” job. It was absolutely terrifying and it took me a long time to learn HR basics on-the-job, but I did my homework and caught up to where I needed to be.

Four years later I am an HR Generalist at a marketing company and I think I am one of the few people of the world who can honestly say that I love my job. I get to write, create, plan events and use many of my PR skills and I never would have known this wonderful career existed had I not said yes to a temp assignment as a file clerk.

Many of you might pass over entry-level admin jobs because you are “too educated” and that is your choice, but remember one thing—your first job (and second and third) will probably not be your dream job, but you should still be good at it. In fact, you should ROCK that job. It may not always be the beginning of a career but you can and should learn something from every experience and every co-worker so when that dream job comes along you’ve already gotten your mistakes out of the way.

Basically what I’m saying is to seize the day, seize every opportunity, and get out there and do something! That’s how you become an HR rockstar.

January, 2013. A Letter From SHRM-LI President, Annette Perry

In Uncategorized on January 31, 2013 by shrmli Tagged: , , , , , , ,

When I assumed the presidency of SHRM-LI in 2011, I was humbled by the confidence bestowed on me and more than just a little frightened about what I was getting myself into.

How could I possibly live up to the expectations of the position?  Was I up to the task?  And would SHRM-LI even survive the next 2 years?  2 years ago, you the membership trusted me to lead the chapter in the right direction and while I wasn’t completely sure I trusted myself I devoted myself to the advancement of the Human Resource profession and specifically SHRM-LI.

Now 2 years later I am even more humbled by your vote of confidence.  In 2011 I had no track record and yet you “took a chance” on me.  Today with my track record firmly in place you honor me with your continued trust and confidence.

The last 2 years have been a whirlwind of activity for the chapter with many significant accomplishments and undertakings.  Some of the highlights include, in no specific order:

1)    Launched a new logo and a new and improved website;

2)    Created an active presence on 6 social media sites earning us Honorable Mention for a Pinnacle Award;

3)    Continued the growth of our business directory, adding new sponsor categories

4)    Achieved Star status on our membership renewal goal with a record number of “at large” members designating SHRM-LI.

5)    Achieved SHAPE Silver level recognition 2 years running

6)    Contributed record breaking donations to the SHRM Foundation achieving Champion status

7)    Successfully launched the Virtual HR (VHR) Program

8)    Increased awareness and activitism on legislative issues affecting Long Island

9)    Hosted 2 highly successful conferences & Holiday parties

10)   Initiated a new Emerging Leaders Special Interest Group

11)   Achieved record-setting attendance at our monthly meetings & and have a new meeting location.

However, I cannot lay claim to these considerable achievements.  The success of our Chapter has always been and continues to remain a direct result of all of our volunteer leaders, our committee chairs, co-chairs and committee members.  It is their passion, drive, loyalty and dedication that continue to propel our chapter to prominence.  I am so very proud to be affiliated with such a group of dedicated and hard working professionals.  You inspire me!!

I would also like to specifically thank our Corp Sponsors, Jackson Lewis and AXA Financial for their continued loyalty and belief in our chapter.  Our sincerest appreciation goes to our Business Directory Partners and Conference sponsors as well.  Without the steadfast support of these organizations we would not be able to provide the membership with the activities and programming we’ve all come to expect from SHRM-LI.

Finally, no words could ever express our appreciation and gratitude to our Executive Director and Conference Producer, Linda Selden-Paduano.  Without her tireless, meticulous and determined efforts on behalf of the chapter we could never even dream of achieving the level of success we enjoy today.

So on behalf of your incoming board, Christel Colon (President Elect), Nicole Quinn (Treasurer), Lisa Dippel (Secretary) and myself I again thank you for your vote of confidence and look forward to continued success and achievements for SHRM-LI in 2013 and beyond.  Thank you

Annette Perry, SHRM-LI President

Legislative efforts: Repeal of the Wage Theft Prevention Act (“WTPA”) annual notification requirement.

In Uncategorized on December 13, 2012 by shrmli Tagged: , , , , , ,

As a follow-up to a recent Jackson Lewis LLP email regarding the
subject matter, the Legislative Committees for SHRM NYS, the NYS Business Council and SHRM-LI is planning an initiative to help the effort to repeal the annual notice of the Wage Theft Prevention Act.
SHRM-LI members will receive social media contact/telephone contact information for targeted Nassau and Suffolk legislators along with suggested dialogue for a one-day blitz effort in January to request their support of the repeal of the annual notification requirement.
We encourage our membership to join us in this initiative. The annual notice portion of the Wage Theft Prevention Act is costly to businesses that have a major payroll providers and disseminate this information per pay period to their employees. The annual notice is a nuisance, that employers should not have to abide by when following best practices for their employees. At a time when businesses in the State of New York are struggling fiscally, they should not have to spend hundreds of dollars to comply with a law.

More information will follow in January.
